“Defective” by Krystal Brown

Kystal Brown has a brand new single on the airwaves. “Defective” is her latest release. We caught up with her the other day. She answered a few questions for the BMS Radio Network.

What is your music background?
I have always loved music but I had no confidence to sing. I began writing songs when I was about 15 and would sing along to the radio. I joined a group singing class at the local community center. I then released an EP called “Lady Sisyphus” a few years ago. My most recent album is “Sugar Free” and is available on all major streaming platforms.

Who are your musical influences?
I have always loved Depeche Mode. I think Martin Gore is a great songwriter. I also like the Norwegian band a-ha. I enjoy the music of Brandy and Solange Knowles as well. I think you can learn something from every genre.

What are your long-term career goals?
My long term career goals are for more people to hear my music and know my name. I want to do music full time.

What type of recording process do you use and who produced your recording?
I write my songs first and then I get a backing track produced to that. I record the vocals, layer them over the backing track and polish everything. I used various producers online using work for hire agreements on Fiverr. The producers were from different countries to make sure that my music had variety. I even had J the musician from Cyprus work on my single “Sugar Free (the Carnival remix).”

Do you ever get the chance to perform live?
I haven’t gotten a chance to perform live yet, mainly due to Covid.

Are you looking for to remain independent or to get a major label deal?
There are pros and cons with each option. But I would like a label deal because they have more resources than I do in order to get my music and name out there and to really market me. It is hard doing it all yourself.

If anything, what would you change about the music industry today?
I would change the fact that it is so about image. It ought to be about the music and how it makes people feel.

Do you have any advice for up-and-coming artists?
Be yourself because everyone else is already taken. We need things that are different and we don’t need everyone sounding the same.

Anything else you want to say on the people?
Please check out my music. I am Krystal Brown and I create indie pop music with a splash of world music influences. My newest album “Sugar Free” is out on all major streaming platforms. Have a great day!
