From Drummer Boy To Independent Artist

Written by on March 27, 2018

LeeSon Bryce is no stranger to the Hits You Love charts. This artist got into music by playing the drums at a young age. He has now grown up to release a successful string of hits including his latest jam “No Limits.” This marks his second consecutive song to hit charts.

We were lucky enough to recently get up with LeeSon and he took the time to answer a few questions for us.

What is your music background?

I have always been influenced with music. I’ve been a drummer since the age of 11 years old, but also played the piano even before I touched the drums. I sang in my church choir, and even made small rhyme schemes back in middle school. I’ve been influenced by music ever since.

Who are your musical influences?

My influences are mainly the fast rappers of the midwest (ie. Tech Nine, Twista, Eminem, etc. ) I always loved how fast rhymes were put together. I’m also influenced by edm and church type beats as well. Even now as we speak, I’m planning on trying to get a feature with Sir The Baptist for this one song I have in mind for the future. But there’s no rush on it.

What are your long-term career goals?

Honestly, I hope to generate enough income to give back to the Kansas City community. I want to help build it back up, maybe even start a new school. With my music and a strong voice, I believe I can. I plan to do music for as long as I can, I want keep pushing further every step of the way.

What type of recording process do you use?

My producer Oblivinatti produced most of my sounds, but I also used other producers like Magestick as well. Between Oblivnatti and my sound engineer, we usually use both Ableton and Pro Tools to give us the unique sound we all want. So far, it’s working.

Do you ever get the chance to perform live?

Plenty of chances, as a matter of fact, I just did 2 shows back to back last week. And if I don’t have a show booked, I do open mics. I try to do a performance at least once or twice a week. I love performing.

Are you looking for to remain independent or to get a major label deal?

For right now, I want to stay independent and build an empire myself. Granted, it’s alot harder going on your own, but it’s definitely more rewarding. I already have a distribution deal with Warner Music Group, but I’m not sure if I want to take it further yet.

If anything, what would you change about the music industry today?

Honestly, after being in the industry for a little while, I realize that it’s very difficult to be heard in a very saturated market. To be better established, one would need a feature from a major artist (or a couple of them). One thing I would change is that I would develop some type of way for musicians to make direct contact with major artists, no third parties. But then again, this more of my own personal wish.

Do you have any advice for up-and-coming artists?

Keep grinding and ignore the noise. Educate yourself on the market and the target audience as well, because that is VERY important.

Any thing else you want to say on the people?

I have a couple of new singles coming out featuring some major artists. The first one to come is Insanity ft. Dave East and JL B Hood. Definitely be sure to check it out when given the chance. Going to be dropping in the end of April! Thank you!
